The MOT test must be carried out annually on vehicles which are older than 3 years. It is a legal requirement that all vehicle owners in the UK must adhere to. If you drive around in a car which doesn’t have the MOT certificate you will get in trouble with the authorities. You won’t be able to tax your car if you don’t have a valid MOT certificate. If you need an approved MOT centre in Bristol, there are several in the area where you can bring your car to be tested. Not all garages can provide MOT certificates, so be careful where you choose.
An approved MOT test centre will carry out a wide range of examinations when they assess the condition of your car, they’ll check all of the following:
- Engine
- Emissions
- Brakes
- Tyres
- Suspension
If your vehicle fails the test, most service centres will allow you to retest for no charge.

Fixed Rate
The government has set a fixed cost, so you shouldn’t pay more than a certain price for the MOT test. It is illegal to charge more, but some garages offer the test at a reduced rate.
Basic Road Safety Test
The MOT isn’t a service, so don’t assume just because your vehicle passed the test it doesn’t need to have some work done. It doesn’t look at the internal parts of the vehicle, only certain components such as your brakes, transmission and engine to see if they are working effectively. It isn’t a thorough assessment that examines integral parts of the engine.
